The Dog Days of Summer

Tips for Keeping Fido Safe this Summer

Your dog can't talk, but if he or she could, they'd probably say "Boy, is it hot! It doesn't help matters that I'm wearing a fur coat!". Here are some tips from the American Kennel Association to keep your best friends safe, healthy, and happy through the dog days of summer.

General Summer Safety Concerns
Hot weather can make anyone feel uncomfortable, and your dog is no exception. Here are some safety concerns for responsible dog owners:

  • Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle. Heatstroke can occur and lead to brain damage or death. Signs of heatstroke are panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. Immediately immerse the dog in cool water and seek emergency veterinary assistance.

  • Never leave your dog unattended in a hot, parked car. When it's only 80 degrees outside, the inside of a car can heat up to more than 120 degrees in just minutes. Leaving the windows partially rolled down will not help. Your dog is susceptible to heat stroke and possible death in these conditions.

  • Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water.

Exercising in the Heat!

Summer is here and the living is easy! Time to get out and play and exercise in the sun. However, understanding how to safely and effectively exercise in the heat is important. Here are some do's and don'ts to help you stay safe and active this summer.

What NOT TO DO:

  • Don't exercise strenuously in high temperatures over 90 degrees or high humidity (over 75%). It is especially important not to work out hard when both temperature and humidity are high. Normally the body deals with high heat levels through perspiration, but when humidity levels are also high, sweat does not evaporate as quickly and body temperature can rise to dangerous levels. (The "heat index" measures a combination of heat and humidity. This index tells you how hot it "feels.")
  • Avoid all outdoor activities if there is a chance of thunderstorms or lightning.
