PUMP IT UP!
HEY JAKE!
I HEAR THAT WOMEN SHOULD WEIGHT TRAIN, BUT I'M AFRAID OF GETTING BULKY AND LOOKING MANLY. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
CLAIRE,
ORLANDO, FLA.
Hello Claire-
Good news - it's physiologically impossible for women to bulk up like men. Women simply
do not have enough of the hormones that allow for increased muscle mass. In
fact, women have ten to thirty times less of those essential hormones than us guys. Unlike most men, women who seek to gain muscle mass
certainly do not have an easy time accomplishing this goal. The women bodybuilders I know work very hard to get their muscular body (work out 5+ days a week, weigh their food and watch their diets like hawks). You won't turn into the Incredible Hulkstress by picking up some dumbbells - I can promise you that. What will happen with regular strength training is you'll tone up and slim down. Because muscle is denser than fat, strength training with weights transforms jiggly muscles into a firm body. It will also help you develop a
stronger heart and stronger connective tissue. It helps control weight
and offers protection against osteoporosis, a major debilitating
disease that can happen in women after menopause. Check out my exercise videos for great muscle toning workouts like Dumbbell Presses, Bicep Curls and Bent Over Rows. And remember to pump it up!

Hey Jake-
This might be a weird/stupid question, but here goes. My friend has told me that if I want to lose weight quickly I should take laxatives. But isn’t this bad for your digestive system?
Liz in Alabama
Hey Liz-
First off - there are no stupid questions, ok?! Actually, this topic is not as weird as you think. I've heard of bodybuilders using laxatives to get ready for competitions. Laxatives are definitely NOT something I recommend. Laxatives are NOT designed to help with weight loss and SHOULD NOT be used for this.

Lunchtime Workout

Jake-
My days are pretty hectic (kids, work) and my nights aren't much better (kids, softball practice, homework, etc.). The only time I have to work out is at lunch. Any suggestions on how I can get to the gym, work out, shower, get back to work, and eat in 1 HOUR OR LESS??!!
Richelle
St. Louis, MO
Hey Richelle- A lunchtime workout is a great idea - but you'll need
to plan ahead. Pack your workout shoes and clothes the night before and
put your keys on top of them, so you won't forget.

You CAN Kick the Habit!
Hey Jake-
Here’s a good question for ya! I’ve been smoking for close to 7 years now. I want to quit because we just had a kid. Got any advice?
Terri L.
Burlington, NC
Hey Terri L., Congrats on
your kid! You definitely do want to stop smoking with a little one
around. Smoke is hard on their little lungs. Plus, you want be in good
health so you can play with your kid for years to come!
